Yarn and Hook
YARN: For a heart garland, use yarn you have at home — or shades that complement your existing decor. A medium-weight yarn (also known as worsted weight) is ideal for beginners.
I used: Lily Sugar'N Cream, Cotton. Colour: Overcast with a 3.5 mm crochet hook.
HOOK: Pair your yarn with a suitable hook, typically a size H-8 (5mm), but always refer to your yarn's label for recommendations.
ABBREVIEATIONS: st=stitch, sl st=slip stitch, ch=chain stitch, sc=single crochet, tr=treble crochet, inc=increase
Material Notes
If you decide to buy yarn, wool works well for this project. If you buy cotton yarn, use a stiffer cotton variety rather than mercerized (shiny).
In case the heart appears too open or misshapen, consider using a smaller hook size for a more refined finish.
Start to crochet your 2D:
Step 1: Create a Magic Circle
Step 2: Chain 4 directly onto the magic circle, this will count as your first treble crochet, continue to work all the following steps into the circle:
Step 3: 3 treble crochets
Step 4: 3 double crochets
Step 5: Chain 1
Step 6: 1 treble crochet
Step 7: Chain 1
Step 8: 3 double crochets
Step 9: 3 treble crochets
Step 10: chain 3
Step 11: Slip stitch into the magic circle.
Step 12: Chain 1 and pull the yarn to tighten it up.
From the back, find the other strand of yarn which is part of the magic circle and tighten it as well. This will fully close the circle.
Weave in the ends securely with a yarn needle to complete the heart and prevent unravelling.
Creating a Pattern by Repeating the Heart Motif
Once you've mastered the first heart, continue to create more hearts following the same pattern. The number of hearts you crochet depends on the desired length of your garland.
I like to crochet 21 hearts, which gives me a nice length of 220 cm / 86'.
Joining the hearts
After crocheting the individual hearts, it's time to join them together.
If you are using different colours, now it’s a good time to decide on your pattern.
Step 1: Chain 50
Step 2: Single crochet into the top right side of your first heart
Step 3: Chain 6
Step 4: Single crochet into the top left side of your first heart
Step 5:**Chain 11
Step 6: Single crochet into the top right side of your first heart
Step 7: Chain 6
Step 8: Single crochet into the top left side of your first heart**
Repeat steps **5 - 8 until all hearts are joined.
Chain 50 after the last heart
Tips and Troubleshooting
If you encounter any issues, such as uneven heart sizes don't despair. Crocheting is a skill honed over time; mistakes are all part of the learning process. Ensure you're counting your stitches accurately and maintaining consistent tension throughout your work.
Heart garlands are incredibly versatile. Experiment with different yarn colours, textures, and sizes to create unique designs. You can also add beads, buttons, or other embellishments to your garland for a personalised touch. These garlands can adorn walls, mantelpieces, or even the edge of a shelf, adding a cosy and creative flair to your space.
Crocheting a heart garland is a simple yet fulfilling project, a great project for crochet beginners to enjoy and succeed at.
